Getting started

What is Hushcode?

Hushcode is a free notepad for developers. You can write plain text, Markdown, and code in close to 100 programming languages, and read log files. It runs in your browser, and you can also install it like an app.

Notes are saved on your device as you type, and Hushcode works without internet once it has loaded. It's made for quick notes, code snippets, and logs.

Hushcode was called Offnote until version 1.3.0. Only the name and address changed.

Do I need an account, or do I have to pay?

No to both. There's nothing to sign up for, and Hushcode is free. If you'd like to support it, the heart button in the top bar goes to my Ko-fi page. You can hide that button in Settings → Appearance.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. After you open Hushcode once, it keeps a copy of itself on your device, so it opens and saves without a connection, in the browser or installed as an app. Sync, Google sign-in, and updates wait until you're back online.

Where are my notes saved?

In your browser, on the device you wrote them on. They aren't uploaded anywhere unless you turn on sync, which keeps an encrypted copy in your own Google Drive (see How does sync work?).

Because notes live in the browser, clearing the browser's data for the site deletes them. Turn on sync or make a backup now and then (see Backing up by hand).

Can I use Hushcode in a private or Incognito window?

You can, but your notes will be deleted. When you close every private window, the browser deletes everything they saved, including your notes. Use a normal window for anything you want to keep, or export your notes before you close it.

How much can I store?

Your browser decides how much room Hushcode gets. On most devices it's a large share of your free disk space, which is far more than notes usually need. Settings → Backup & storage shows how much you're using, and Hushcode warns you if it gets close to full.

Single files up to 1 GB can be opened. Files over 5 MB open in a read-only view and aren't saved as notes, so very large logs stay fast.

Who makes Hushcode?

IzzyIs, a solo developer who also makes games, art, and Minecraft mods. Hushcode is part of IzzyIs Tools, a set of free web tools. You can find more at izzyis.net.

Most of Hushcode's code was written with Claude. The design, features, and testing were done by IzzyIs.

Notes and organizing

How do I start a new note?

Click New note and pick what you'll write in: Markdown, Markdown (live), Plain text, or a code language. You can search the list by name or by file extension, like python or .py. Alt + N (Option + N on a Mac) skips the question and uses your last pick.

To change a note's language later, use the Language button at the left of the toolbar, or go into the note's settings (its gear in the notes list), or open Navigation (Ctrl + Shift + \) and change it there.

How do I use folders and tags?

The arrow next to New note makes folders and tags. To put a note in a folder, hold it for a moment and drag it onto the folder. Each note's gear (it shows when you point at a note) sets its folder, tags, and pin.

Click a tag next to a note's name to see every note with that tag. The Sort & Filter button sorts the list and filters it by language or tag.

Can I change several notes at once?

Yes. Click Select under the search box, pick the notes, and pin, tag, move, or trash them together. On a computer, Ctrl + click and Shift + click work too.

I deleted a note by accident. Can I get it back?

Deleted notes stay in Trashed Notes (the Trash button at the bottom of the notes list) for 3 days. Open it and restore the note. After 3 days they're deleted for good.

If you use sync, Google Drive also keeps daily backups for about a month (see Daily backups in Google Drive).

How do locked notes work?

A locked note has its own password of at least 8 characters, with an optional hint. Its text is encrypted on your device, and it locks itself again after 30 minutes without use.

There's no way to recover a forgotten password. Not even I can open the note, since the password never leaves your device. Keep the hint helpful, and keep a backup of anything important somewhere else.

How do I find a note faster?

Type in the search box above the notes list to search names and text. Ctrl + Shift + \ opens Navigation, where you can jump to any note by name. Type > there to run any action by name, like renaming the note or opening settings.

Can I open notes in tabs?

In the installed app on a computer, yes. A new note, an opened file, or a middle-click on a note opens it in a new tab. Ctrl + Alt + Left and Right arrows (Cmd + Option on a Mac) move between tabs. To give every note you open from the notes list its own tab, turn on Open every note in a new tab in Settings → Editor. You can turn tabs off in Settings → Notes list.

Writing

What are Write, Split, and Read views?

The Write view is where you type. The Read view shows the note formatted (or, for plain text and code, wrapped and easy to read). The Split view shows both side by side and keeps them lined up as you scroll. Code notes have the Code and Read views.

How do I hide everything but my note?

Turn on focus mode with Ctrl + Shift + F, or from the nine-dot menu. The top bar fades while you type and comes back when you move the mouse. Esc turns it off.

Typewriter mode (Settings → Editor) keeps the line you're typing in the middle of the screen. Centered text keeps lines a comfortable width on wide screens.

Can I set a word goal or a timer?

Yes, both are in the nine-dot menu. A word goal can count words or characters, and shows your progress in the status bar. The timer counts down while you write.

Can I change the font or the text size?

The nine-dot menu has Font, with 25 fonts. A note can use one font while you write and another when you read. Text size is in Settings → Appearance, from 80% to 160%.

How do I jump to a heading?

In a Markdown note with headings, the Outline button in the top right corner lists them. Pick one to jump there.

How do I find and replace?

Ctrl + F finds, and Ctrl + H finds and replaces. In find and replace, Enter replaces the current match and Ctrl + Alt + Enter replaces them all. Find also works in the Read view.

Can I print a note or save it as a PDF?

Yes. Press Ctrl + P, or use Print in the nine-dot menu. To make a PDF, pick "Save as PDF" in your browser's print window.

Markdown

What's the difference between Markdown and Markdown (live)?

In a Markdown note you type the symbols, like **bold**, and see the result in the Read or Split view. In Markdown (live), the formatting shows as you type and the symbols hide until your cursor reaches them.

Both save the same plain .md text, and the Language button switches a note between them at any time.

What can Markdown notes show?

Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, highlights, lists, checklists, quotes, links, images, tables, code blocks with colors, footnotes, definition lists, subscript and superscript, emoji, and math (LaTeX). Open the Markdown cheat sheet (Settings → About → Example notes) to see each one with the text that makes it.

How do tables work in live notes?

Tables show as real tables, and you type right in a cell. Tab and Shift + Tab move between cells, and Enter moves down a row. With the cursor in a table, the toolbar has buttons to add and delete rows and columns. On a phone, tap a cell to type in it.

Backspace at the start of the line under a table lights the table up first, and a second Backspace deletes it, so a table is never deleted by accident.

Can I write math?

Yes, with LaTeX. Put math between single dollar signs inside a line, like $e^{i\pi} + 1 = 0$, or between $$ lines for a block of its own.

Can I style Markdown with my own CSS?

No. You can change how notes look with the theme, accent color, background picture, fonts, and text size in settings.

Code

Which languages does Hushcode support?

97 code and log languages, from ActionScript to YAML, including Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, C, C++, C#, Java, Go, Rust, HTML, CSS, SQL, Lua, and GLSL. Each gets syntax colors. Click New note and search the list to see them all.

What does the code editor do?

It has line numbers, a shaded current line, guide lines on both sides of the code, auto-closing brackets and quotes, indenting after an opening bracket, and word suggestions you accept with Tab. You can change each of these in Settings → Editor → Coding, including the tab width (2 to 10 spaces).

In the Read view, click the arrow next to a line to fold away everything indented under it.

Can I run my code?

No. Hushcode is for writing and reading code, not running it.

Can I open big log files?

Yes, up to 1 GB. Files over 5 MB open in a fast read-only view that you can scroll and search, and they aren't saved as notes. To open any file just to look at it, use Open a file without saving (Ctrl + Shift + O).

Files and exporting

How do I open a file?

Press Ctrl + O, or use Open at the bottom of the notes list. The file becomes a note. Ctrl + Shift + O opens it without saving it as a note, which is handy for logs. The installed app can also be picked as the app that opens .md, .txt, and code files on your computer.

Can my edits save back to the file I opened?

In Chrome and Edge on a computer, yes. The note stays linked to the file. Settings → Import & Export has "Save changes to opened files": "Never" opens files as regular notes, "Ask me every time" asks first, "Always" saves as you type, and "When I press Ctrl + S" only saves when you press it.

What can I export?

  • One note: Export note (Ctrl + Shift + S) saves it as a file with its own extension, like .md, .txt, or .py.
  • Every note: Export all notes as files saves a .zip of them.
  • A PDF: print the note and pick "Save as PDF" (Ctrl + P).
  • A full backup: Back up all notes (Settings → Backup & storage) saves one file you can restore later.

Hushcode doesn't make Word (.docx) files. To get a note into a Word document, open it in the Read view, copy it, and paste it into the document. Most of the formatting comes along.

Can I share text into Hushcode from other apps?

On Android, with Hushcode installed, yes. Share text or a file from another app and pick Hushcode. It opens as a new note.

Sync and backups

How does sync work?

Sync keeps your notes the same on all your devices through your own Google Drive. Turn it on in Settings → Sync. Hushcode saves your notes in a hidden folder in your Drive that only Hushcode can see, so it doesn't clutter your files.

Your notes are encrypted on your device before they're uploaded, with a key that only your devices have. Google stores the file but can't read it, and I never receive your notes at all.

To keep you signed in to Drive, a small sign-in helper on my server trades sign-in codes with Google. It never sees your notes.

How do I add another device?

On a device that already syncs, open Settings → Sync and choose Add another device. Scan the QR code with the new device's camera app (Hushcode doesn't have a scanner of its own), or copy the link and open it there. The link holds your sync key, so only share it with your own devices.

On an iPhone or iPad, links open in Safari. If you use Hushcode from your home screen there, copy the link and paste it into Sync in that copy instead.

Daily backups in Google Drive

With sync on, Hushcode saves an encrypted backup in your Drive once a day, by itself. It keeps the last 7 days, plus one from each of the 4 weeks before. To bring notes back from one, open Settings → Sync and choose Backups in Google Drive.

What if I edit the same note on two devices at once?

Hushcode combines the changes. Edits in different parts of the note are both kept. If both devices changed the very same words, the newer edit stays in the note and a banner says it was edited on two devices. Choose Review to see both edits and keep the other one if you'd like.

Backing up by hand

Settings → Backup & storage has Back up all notes, which saves every note, folder, and tag in one file. Restore a backup adds the backup's notes and keeps the ones you already have. This also moves notes to a device without sync. Hushcode can remind you to make a backup now and then.

Do my settings sync too?

No, only notes, folders, and tags. Your theme, accent, background picture, and other settings stay on each device, so each one can look the way you want.

What happens if my Google Drive is full?

Your notes are still saved on your device. Settings → Sync says your Drive is full and the synced copy can't be updated. Free up some space in Drive and sync again.

How do I stop syncing?

Open Settings → Sync and choose Stop syncing on this device. Your notes stay on the device, and the copy in Drive stays for your other devices. To delete that copy, open Google Drive's settings, then Manage apps, then Hushcode, and delete its hidden app data.

Privacy and security

Who can read my notes?

Only you. Your notes stay on your device unless you turn on sync, and synced notes are encrypted before they leave it. I never receive your notes, and Google can't read the synced copy.

How are my notes encrypted?

Synced notes and Drive backups use AES-GCM with a 256-bit key that's made at random on your first device and only shared with the devices you add.

Locked notes use AES-GCM with a 256-bit key made from your password with PBKDF2 (SHA-256, 600,000 rounds). The password is never saved.

Is Hushcode open source?

No. Hushcode's code isn't open source, and it won't be anytime soon. It does use open-source libraries, like CodeMirror for the editor and KaTeX for math, under their own licenses.

Does Hushcode track me or show ads?

No. Hushcode has no ads and no analytics. Other pages on IzzyIs Tools may show ads and use analytics, but only if you agree to cookies. See the Privacy Policy for the details.

I forgot a locked note's password

Sorry, there's no way to open it. The note is encrypted with your password, and there's no backdoor. If the note was in a backup made before you locked it, you can restore that backup.

Installing and updates

How do I install Hushcode on my computer?

In Chrome or Edge, click the Install Hushcode button (the download arrow) in Hushcode's top bar, or the install icon at the right end of the address bar. On Windows, you can also get Hushcode from the Microsoft Store.

How do I install it on my phone or tablet?

On Android, open the browser menu and tap Install app or Add to Home screen. On iPhone or iPad, tap Share in Safari, then Add to Home Screen.

Should I use the Microsoft Store version or the browser?

They're the same app with the same notes, and both update themselves. The Store version installs like any other Windows app, so it's easy to find in the Start menu and uninstall later. Use whichever you like.

How do updates work?

Hushcode checks for a new version whenever it's open and online, and downloads it in the background. When it's ready, a message with a Reload button shows. You can also press Check for updates in Settings → About. Updates never change your notes.

The Microsoft Store version updates the same way, straight from the website, so you don't have to wait for a Store update.

What's the custom title bar?

In the installed app in Chrome or Edge on a computer, Hushcode's top bar moves up into the window's title bar, so you get a little more room. The small arrow next to the window buttons switches back to a regular title bar.

Phones and tablets

Why doesn't the keyboard open when I tap a note?

In the installed app, the keyboard waits until you double-tap the note or tap the yellow pencil button. This way scrolling never pops it up by accident. You can turn this off with Double-tap to edit in Settings → Editor.

What can I swipe?

In the installed app, swipe right to see your notes, and swipe left on a note to read it. You can turn swipes off in Settings → Editor.

What does a button do?

Hold any button for a moment to see its name.

Does everything work on a phone?

Almost everything. The floating window, the custom title bar, tabs, and saving straight back to opened files need Chrome or Edge on a computer.

Troubleshooting

My notes are gone after I cleared my browser data

Clearing a browser's data for the site deletes the notes stored in it. I can't get them back, since they were never sent to me. If you use sync, open Hushcode, turn sync back on, and your notes come back from Drive. If you made a backup, use Restore a backup in Settings → Backup & storage.

My installed app shows an address bar since the name change

Hushcode moved from tools.izzyis.net/offnote to tools.izzyis.net/hushcode when it was renamed. An app installed before the move still opens, but your browser may show the address at the top. To fix it, uninstall the app and install it again from tools.izzyis.net/hushcode. Your notes are still there afterward.

I don't see the newest version

Reload the page. In the installed app, close it completely and open it again. To see which version you're using, open Settings → About. It's at the top, right after "Hushcode (formerly Offnote)."

Hushcode says storage is almost full

Your browser is running out of room for Hushcode. Make a backup in Settings → Backup & storage, then delete notes you don't need, and use Purge in Trashed Notes to delete the notes waiting there for good.

Sync says to reconnect or to update

The Reconnect button means Google needs you to sign in again. Press it and sign in. "Update Hushcode" means another device synced with a newer version, so reload Hushcode on this one to keep syncing.

Using it for work

Can I use Hushcode for work?

Yes. Hushcode is free for personal and commercial work, and no account is needed. Please read the Terms of Service for more information.

Can my team edit the same note together?

No. Sync is for your own devices, through your own Google Drive. To share a note with someone, export it or copy it.

Where does company data go?

Nowhere, unless you turn on sync, which only uses your own Google Drive with encryption. Check your company's rules before syncing work notes to a personal Drive.
