    FAQ

    Is my text private?

Yes. Your text is counted and saved right in your browser, on this device only. It's never sent to our servers. Clearing your browser data removes it, so download a copy of anything important.

What if I delete my text by accident?

If everything (or almost everything) disappears at once, a pop-up appears at the top of the page for 5 seconds with a "Restore text" button. Hovering over the pop-up pauses the timer. You can also use your browser's undo: Ctrl + Z on Windows, or Command + Z on Mac.

How do I make the text box bigger?

The text box grows on its own as you type, up to a bit more than half your screen, and then scrolls. To make it bigger yourself on a computer, drag the small handle in its bottom-right corner down. To make the words themselves bigger, use the "Size" button.

Why do some platform character counters sometimes differ from the total amount of characters?

Each platform counts a little differently, so each counter follows that platform's rules. Most count an emoji as 2 characters. X also counts every link as 23 characters and some characters, like Chinese or Japanese, as 2. Bluesky counts an emoji as 1. The Characters total counts each letter, space, or emoji you see as 1.

    Which platforms can I track?

YouTube, Instagram, X, Facebook, and TikTok show up by default. You can also add Threads, Bluesky, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Reddit, Twitch, Discord, WhatsApp, and Mastodon, plus popular platforms outside the US: Bilibili, Weibo, RedNote (Xiaohongshu), Telegram, and VK. Show up to 20 counters at a time with the "Platforms" button.

Limits are checked regularly but can change. For YouTube's post preview, 288 characters is the amount of characters users see before "Read more" appears. Bilibili allows 250 characters in most video descriptions, though some categories allow up to 2,000.

How are words, reading time, and speaking time counted?

A word is any group of letters or numbers between spaces, so "well-known" counts as 1. Each Chinese or Japanese character counts as its own word. Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average for adults reading silently. Speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, which is a natural pace for videos and speeches.
